The Core Difference
Botox Relaxes. Fillers Replace.
That one sentence explains 90% of injectable decisions. Here's the full picture.
Botox & Dysport
Relaxes muscles. Smooths movement-caused lines.
How it works
Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators — they temporarily block nerve signals to specific muscles, preventing those muscles from contracting. When the muscle doesn't move, the overlying skin doesn't crease. Results last 3–4 months.
Best for
- ✦Forehead lines (horizontal lines when you raise your brows)
- ✦Frown lines / "11s" between the brows
- ✦Crow's feet around the eyes
- ✦Lip lines and lip flip
- ✦Chin dimpling (mentalis)
- ✦Neck bands (platysmal)
Ideal candidate
Dynamic wrinkles — lines that form or deepen when you move your face. If you see lines appear when you frown, squint, or raise your brows, Botox addresses the source.
Not ideal for
Volume loss, sunken areas, deep static folds at rest, lip fullness, or facial contouring. Botox relaxes but does not add volume.
Downtime
None. Return to normal activity immediately.
Results
Visible in 3–7 days. Full effect at 2 weeks.
Dermal Fillers
Adds volume. Restores and contours.
How it works
Dermal fillers (typically hyaluronic acid — Juvéderm®, Restylane®) are injected into specific areas to physically replace or enhance volume. HA attracts water, creating a plumping effect. Results are immediate and last 6–18 months depending on the product and area.
Best for
- ✦Lip volume and definition (lip filler)
- ✦Cheek volume and midface lift
- ✦Nasolabial folds (smile lines at rest)
- ✦Marionette lines
- ✦Under-eye hollows (tear troughs)
- ✦Jawline and chin sculpting
Ideal candidate
Volume loss, contouring, structural work, and static folds that are visible at rest. If you want fuller lips, higher cheekbones, or a defined jawline, filler is the tool.
Not ideal for
Lines caused purely by muscle movement (Botox addresses those better). Filler in a dynamic wrinkle can sometimes look unnatural.
Downtime
Minimal. Possible swelling and bruising for 1–3 days.
Results
Immediate. Final results visible once swelling resolves (1–2 weeks).
Decision Guide
Which One Is Right for Your Concern?
Match your concern to the right treatment. Many clients eventually use both — they're complementary, not competing.
If you have…
You have forehead lines or crow's feet
Botox. These are dynamic lines caused by muscle movement.
If you have…
You want fuller lips
Filler. Botox cannot add volume — only filler creates lip fullness.
If you have…
You have deep nasolabial folds (smile lines) visible at rest
Filler. Static folds at rest are volume deficiencies, not muscle issues.
If you have…
You want to prevent new lines from forming
Botox. Preventing muscle movement prevents the skin from creasing repeatedly over time.
If you have…
You've lost volume in your cheeks or temples
Filler (or Sculptra for gradual collagen restoration). Volume loss requires volume replacement.
If you have…
You want a more defined jawline
Filler along the jaw for structural enhancement. Botox in the masseter for jaw slimming.
If you have…
You have frown lines (the "11s") that bother you
Botox is the primary treatment. Filler may be added afterward for residual depth.

Common Questions
Botox vs. Filler — FAQs
What is the difference between Botox and dermal fillers?
Botox (and Dysport) are neuromodulators — they relax the muscles that cause expression lines like crow's feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Dermal fillers are injectable gels that add or restore volume — they're used for lips, cheeks, nasolabial folds, and jawline contouring. They solve different problems, which is why many clients use both.
Should I get Botox or fillers first?
It depends on your primary concern. If you're bothered by movement-caused lines (forehead, crow's feet, 11s), start with Botox. If your concern is volume loss, lips, or static folds visible at rest, start with filler. Many clients eventually use both — they complement rather than compete with each other. Your RN will assess your face and recommend the most impactful starting point.
How long does Botox last vs. fillers?
Botox typically lasts 3–4 months before the muscle activity gradually returns. Dermal fillers last 6–18 months depending on the product type and treatment area — lip fillers tend to metabolize faster (6–12 months), while cheek and jawline fillers can last 12–18 months. Both require ongoing maintenance for sustained results.
Can Botox and fillers be done together?
Yes, and they're frequently combined in what's sometimes called a 'liquid facelift' — Botox relaxes dynamic lines while filler restores volume and structure. Many clients have both done in the same appointment. Your RN will advise on the sequencing and what combination is appropriate for your face.
Are Botox and fillers safe?
Both are FDA-approved and have extensive safety records when administered by trained providers. At Maison Zolara, all injectables are performed by a licensed RN under direct MD supervision. The most important safety factor is the injector — technique, anatomical knowledge, and product selection matter significantly. We use only FDA-approved products.
How much does Botox vs. filler cost in Lansing, MI?
