Botox

What is Botox?

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is the most widely performed aesthetic treatment in the United States, and for good reason: when dosed precisely and placed by a skilled injector, it delivers a refreshed, rested appearance without altering your natural expressions. At Maison Zolara — located in west Lansing at 4820 W Saginaw Hwy — our licensed RN clinicians combine clinical precision with an artistic eye to help patients from across the greater Lansing area achieve results that look like you, only more relaxed.

What It Treats

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of three cosmetic treatment areas in adults. Maison Zolara offers all three FDA-approved indications as well as several additional evidence-supported applications.

Alternatives

Several FDA-approved neurotoxins are available in the aesthetic market. Maison Zolara uses Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA); the alternatives below are described for educational context only.

NeurotoxinActive MoleculeTypical OnsetTypical Duration
Botox CosmeticOnabotulinumtoxinA3–7 days3–4 months
DysportAbobotulinumtoxinA2–3 days3–4 months
XeominIncobotulinumtoxinA3–7 days3–4 months
DaxxifyDaxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm3–7 daysUp to 6 months
JeuveauPrabotulinumtoxinA3–7 days3–4 months

All neurotoxins in this class work by the same mechanism — temporarily blocking acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction — but differ in molecular structure, accessory proteins, and formulation. Unit dosing is not interchangeable between products; a unit of Botox Cosmetic is not equivalent to a unit of Dysport or any other brand. Your injector will determine the appropriate product and dose at your consultation.

Botox Cosmetic

The longest-established neurotoxin with the deepest clinical evidence base. Onset typically occurs within 3–7 days, with peak effect at approximately two weeks. Results last 3–4 months for most patients. Ideal for first-time patients and those who value a well-studied, predictable product.

Other Neurotoxins

Dysport, Xeomin, Daxxify, and Jeuveau are all FDA-approved alternatives with similar mechanisms. Some patients prefer Dysport for its slightly faster onset; Daxxify may offer longer duration. Xeomin contains no accessory proteins, which some providers prefer for patients with theoretical antibody concerns. None of these products are currently offered at Maison Zolara.

Safety & Risks

Botox Cosmetic has a well-established safety profile when administered by trained clinicians in a medically supervised setting. Understanding the risk profile helps you make an informed decision.

Common side effects (typically mild and temporary):

  • Injection-site redness, swelling, or bruising
  • Mild headache in the first 24 hours
  • Temporary tenderness at injection sites

Less common but possible:

  • Temporary eyelid drooping (ptosis) if product migrates — minimized by proper injection technique and avoiding rubbing the treated area
  • Asymmetry, which can often be corrected at a follow-up appointment
  • Flu-like symptoms in rare cases

Contraindications — do not receive Botox if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (Botox Cosmetic is Pregnancy Category C; use during pregnancy is not recommended)
  • Have a known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin product or its excipients
  • Have an active infection at the proposed injection site
  • Have certain neuromuscular disorders (e.g., ALS, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome)

FDA Safety Note: The FDA prescribing information for Botox Cosmetic states that the product is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any botulinum toxin preparation and in the presence of infection at the proposed injection site. Botox Cosmetic should not be used during pregnancy unless the potential benefit justifies the potential risk. Always disclose your full medical history at your consultation. ↗

All treatments at Maison Zolara are performed by our licensed registered nurse (RN) clinicians under the clinical oversight of our on-staff Medical Director. A thorough health history review is completed at every consultation before any treatment is recommended.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Botox Cosmetic is appropriate for a wide range of adults. The following guide can help you assess fit before your consultation.

Most patients who benefit from Botox are healthy adults with dynamic facial wrinkles — lines that appear or deepen with muscle movement. It is not effective for static wrinkles (lines present at rest) or volume loss, which are better addressed with dermal fillers.

Good Candidates

  • Adults 18+ with moderate to severe dynamic wrinkles
  • Patients seeking a natural, refreshed appearance
  • Those who want a non-surgical, no-downtime option
  • Patients with hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)
  • First-time injectable patients wanting a reversible treatment
  • Existing patients maintaining prior results

Not a Good Fit

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals
  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin
  • Active infection at the proposed injection site
  • Certain neuromuscular disorders (ALS, myasthenia gravis)
  • Patients seeking treatment for static wrinkles or volume loss
  • Those with unrealistic expectations about outcome

If you're unsure whether Botox is right for you, our free consultation is the best next step. Our licensed RN clinicians will give you an honest assessment and recommend the most appropriate treatment — even if that means a different service entirely.

Before and after your visit

How It Works

Botox Cosmetic contains onabotulinumtoxinA, a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum. When injected into a targeted facial muscle, it temporarily blocks the release of acetylcholine — the neurotransmitter that signals the muscle to contract. According to peer-reviewed research published in PubMed by the National Library of Medicine, botulinum toxin type A acts peripherally by inhibiting acetylcholine release from presynaptic neuromuscular terminals, producing reversible chemical denervation of the muscle fiber. ↗

The result is a temporary softening of the dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement — frown lines, forehead creases, and crow's feet — without affecting the surrounding tissues or your ability to make natural facial expressions. The effect is temporary and reversible; muscles gradually regain full function as the protein is metabolized, typically over three to four months.

Clinical bottom line: Botox works by temporarily relaxing specific muscles, not by filling or freezing the face. Proper dosing by an experienced injector preserves natural movement while visibly reducing wrinkle depth.

What to Expect

Here is a clear picture of the Botox experience at Maison Zolara, from your first contact through your follow-up.

Before Your Treatment

Your journey begins with a free consultation with one of our licensed RN clinicians. We review your health history, discuss your aesthetic goals, examine your facial anatomy and muscle movement, and develop a personalized treatment plan. We'll confirm pricing at this visit — final unit counts depend on your individual anatomy and goals. No treatment is performed without your informed consent.

During Treatment

The appointment itself is brief — most patients are in and out in 20–30 minutes. The skin is cleansed and, if desired, a topical numbing cream can be applied. Our clinician uses a fine-gauge needle to place precise micro-injections into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick pinch. There is no anesthesia required and no recovery room time.

After Treatment

You can return to most normal activities immediately. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours, avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day, and stay upright for at least four hours post-treatment. Results begin to appear within 3–7 days, with peak effect at approximately two weeks. A complimentary follow-up is available at two weeks if any touch-up is desired.

Aftercare

Proper aftercare helps protect your results and minimize the small risk of product migration. The guidelines are simple and easy to follow.

Do

  • Stay upright for at least 4 hours after treatment
  • Apply a cold compress gently if you experience swelling or bruising
  • Attend your two-week follow-up appointment
  • Use SPF daily to protect your skin and extend results
  • Stay hydrated and maintain a consistent skincare routine

Avoid

  • Rubbing, massaging, or pressing on treated areas for 24 hours
  • Strenuous exercise or activities that significantly raise your heart rate for the rest of treatment day
  • Lying face-down (e.g., massage table) for 24 hours
  • Alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment
  • Excessive heat (saunas, hot tubs) for 24 hours

Botox Cosmetic

The product used at Maison Zolara is Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA), manufactured by AbbVie/Allergan Aesthetics — the original, most extensively studied botulinum toxin type A product on the market.

FDA-Approved Since 2002

Botox Cosmetic was the first neurotoxin approved by the FDA for cosmetic use, establishing the aesthetic neuromodulator category. It now holds three distinct cosmetic FDA approvals: glabellar lines (2002), lateral canthal lines (2013), and forehead lines (2017).

Extensive Clinical Record

With over two decades of post-market safety data and millions of treatments performed annually, Botox Cosmetic has one of the most robust real-world safety profiles of any aesthetic injectable.

Precise, Predictable Dosing

The unit-based dosing system allows our licensed RN clinicians to tailor treatment precisely to your anatomy and desired outcome — whether that means a subtle softening or a more noticeable refresh.

Reversible Results

Results are temporary by design. As the onabotulinumtoxinA protein is metabolized, full muscle function returns — typically within three to four months — making it a low-commitment entry point for patients new to injectables.

About the "Frozen Face" Fear

One of the most common concerns we hear from patients — especially those considering Botox for the first time — is the fear of looking "frozen," expressionless, or obviously "done." This concern is completely valid, and it's worth addressing directly.

The frozen, unnatural look associated with Botox is almost always the result of two things: overdosing and improper placement. When too many units are injected, or when product is placed in the wrong muscle groups, it can flatten natural movement and create a mask-like appearance. This is not an inherent property of the treatment — it is a technique and dosing problem.

At Maison Zolara, our licensed RN clinicians are trained in conservative, anatomy-based injection protocols. We start with the minimum effective dose needed to achieve your goal, assess your results at a follow-up, and adjust from there. The objective is never to eliminate movement — it is to soften the lines created by movement while preserving the expressions that make you you.

What natural Botox results actually look like:

  • Forehead lines are reduced but you can still raise your brows
  • Frown lines soften but you can still show emotion
  • Crow's feet are less prominent but your smile remains genuine
  • Friends notice you look refreshed — not that you've "had something done"

The key variables are injector experience, product knowledge, and a shared understanding of your aesthetic goals. That conversation starts at your free consultation.

Questions, answered

What is Botox and how does it work?

Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an FDA-approved injectable that temporarily relaxes specific facial muscles by blocking the nerve signal that causes them to contract. The active ingredient is a purified protein derived from Clostridium botulinum. When injected in precise, small amounts, it softens the dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated muscle movement — like frown lines, forehead creases, and crow's feet — without affecting surrounding tissues. The effect is temporary and reversible.

How long does it take to work?

Most patients begin to notice results within 3–7 days of treatment. Full, peak results are typically visible at approximately two weeks. If you have a special event, plan to schedule your appointment at least two weeks in advance to allow time for the full effect to develop and for any minor touch-ups if needed.

How long do results last?

For most patients, results last 3–4 months. Some patients — particularly those who have maintained consistent treatment over time — may enjoy results for up to 5–6 months. First-time patients sometimes notice results fading closer to the 2.5–3 month mark. Individual factors including metabolism, muscle strength, and treatment area all influence duration.

What does it cost at Maison Zolara?

Botox Cosmetic starts at From $13/unit for standard patients and From $11/unit for Maison Circle members. Final pricing is confirmed at your consultation, as the total number of units depends on your anatomy, the areas being treated, and your desired outcome. We never quote a flat "area" price without first assessing your individual needs.

Who is a good candidate?

Most healthy adults with moderate to severe dynamic facial wrinkles are good candidates. You should not receive Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin, have an active infection at the injection site, or have certain neuromuscular conditions. A thorough health history review at your free consultation will confirm candidacy.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe the injections as a quick, mild pinch — similar to a small insect sting. The needles used are very fine, and the treatment is brief. Topical numbing cream is available if desired. The majority of patients find the procedure very tolerable with no need for any anesthesia.

Can I get Botox while pregnant?

No. Botox Cosmetic is classified as Pregnancy Category C by the FDA, meaning adequate human studies are not available and animal studies have shown potential fetal risk. It is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please disclose any pregnancy or plans to become pregnant at your consultation.

How many units do I need for my forehead?

The forehead typically requires 15–30 units, the glabellar (frown line) area 20–30 units, and crow's feet 10–20 units per side. However, these are general ranges — your actual unit count depends on your muscle strength, anatomy, and desired outcome. Our licensed RN clinicians will provide a personalized recommendation at your consultation. We always start conservatively and can add units at your two-week follow-up if desired.

What is the difference between Botox and fillers?

Botox relaxes muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles caused by movement. Dermal fillers add volume to restore fullness, smooth static lines, or enhance facial contours. They address different concerns and are often used together for comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Our Botox vs. Fillers guide and dermal fillers page explain the distinction in detail.
