On October 15, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety communication titled "Potential Risks with Certain Uses of Radiofrequency (RF) Microneedling," making consumers and healthcare providers aware that serious complications — including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, and nerve damage — have been reported with certain uses of RF microneedling devices. ↗

FDA Safety Communication (October 15, 2025): The FDA has identified serious complications associated with certain uses of RF microneedling devices, including burns, scarring, fat loss, disfigurement, and nerve damage. The FDA specifically recommends that patients seek treatment from a qualified, licensed healthcare provider using FDA-cleared devices. Maison Zolara performs RF microneedling exclusively with the FDA-cleared Candela Matrix RF System, performed by licensed RN clinicians under Medical Director oversight.

The critical phrase in the FDA communication is "certain uses." The documented adverse events are overwhelmingly associated with:

• Unlicensed or undertrained operators using devices without proper clinical training
• Incorrect depth settings that deliver energy into subcutaneous fat rather than the dermis
• Consumer-grade or non-FDA-cleared devices used outside of a medical setting
• Aggressive treatment protocols that exceed safe energy parameters

RF Microneedling

RF microneedling delivers energy subdermally through insulated needles, making it appropriate for all skin tones and offering precise depth control. It is best suited for patients seeking collagen remodeling, scar revision, pore reduction, and skin tightening with minimal surface disruption and a relatively short social downtime.

Standard Microneedling

Standard microneedling (without RF) creates micro-channels in the skin to stimulate collagen through mechanical injury alone, without the addition of thermal energy. It is a different treatment — generally milder, with less depth of effect — and is also offered at Maison Zolara. RF microneedling is appropriate for a wide range of patients, but a thorough consultation is always required before treatment. The following provides general guidance; your RN clinician will make the final determination.

Good Candidates

• Adults with acne scars, enlarged pores, or uneven skin texture
• Patients with fine lines, early skin laxity, or loss of firmness
• All Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI with appropriate settings
• Patients seeking improvement without surgical downtime
• Those who have completed isotretinoin (Accutane) at least 6 months prior
• Patients in Okemos, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Williamston, Charlotte, St. Johns, and surrounding communities within our 30-mile service radius

Not a Good Fit

• Active acne breakouts or skin infections in the treatment area
• Pregnancy or breastfeeding
• Active keloid scarring history (requires careful evaluation)
• Pacemakers or implanted electronic devices
• Blood-thinning medications (requires physician clearance)
• Recent use of isotretinoin within the past 6 months
• Open wounds, sunburn, or compromised skin barrier in the treatment area

Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that combines two well-established mechanisms — controlled micro-injury and thermal energy — to stimulate the skin's natural repair process at a deeper level than either approach achieves alone.

During treatment, an array of fine, insulated needles penetrates the dermis to a precise, adjustable depth. At that depth, radiofrequency energy is emitted directly into the tissue, generating a focused zone of heat. That thermal stimulus triggers a cascade of collagen and elastin synthesis without damaging the overlying epidermis. The result is progressive skin remodeling that continues for weeks to months after each session.

Before Your Treatment

Your journey begins with a free consultation with one of our licensed RN clinicians. We review your skin concerns, medical history, current medications, and skincare routine. Contraindications are assessed (see Candidacy section below). You will be asked to avoid retinoids, exfoliating acids, and prolonged sun exposure for several days before your appointment. A topical numbing cream is applied approximately 45–60 minutes before treatment begins.

During Treatment

The Candela Matrix RF System handpiece is passed methodically across the treatment area. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm pressure with occasional brief stinging as the needles engage. Treatment time for a full face is typically 30–45 minutes. Our RN clinicians monitor your comfort throughout and can adjust settings in real time. A cooling device or cold compress is applied immediately after treatment to soothe the skin.

After Treatment

Redness and mild swelling are expected for 24–48 hours — similar in appearance to a moderate sunburn. Pinpoint marks from the needle entry sites may be visible for 1–3 days. Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours, though social events should be planned around the initial redness window. Makeup can typically be applied after 24 hours. Full collagen remodeling results develop gradually over 3–6 months.

Proper aftercare is essential to achieving the best possible results and minimizing risk. The following guidelines apply to the first 7 days post-treatment; your RN clinician will provide personalized written instructions at your appointment.

Do

• Apply gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer as directed
• Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily, starting the day after treatment
• Keep the skin clean with a mild, non-exfoliating cleanser
• Stay well hydrated
• Sleep on a clean pillowcase for the first few nights
• Contact our clinic if you notice unusual warmth, swelling, or discharge

Avoid

• Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, and vitamin C serums for at least 5–7 days
• Direct sun exposure without SPF protection
• Strenuous exercise and excessive sweating for 24–48 hours
• Swimming pools, hot tubs, and saunas for 48–72 hours
• Picking, rubbing, or exfoliating the treated area
• Makeup application for the first 24 hours
