Dermal Fillers

What is Dermal Fillers?

Facial volume loss is one of the most visible signs of aging — and one of the most addressable. Starting in our mid-twenties, the body produces less collagen and hyaluronic acid, causing cheeks to flatten, smile lines to deepen, and lips to thin. Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers replace that lost volume precisely where it matters, with results that look refreshed rather than overdone.

What It Treats

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers address a wide range of concerns related to volume loss, contour, and facial aging.

Safety & Risks

Dermal filler safety depends heavily on injector training, product selection, and clinical protocols. At Maison Zolara, every filler treatment is performed by our licensed RN clinicians under the clinical oversight of our on-staff Medical Director.

The most common side effects are mild and temporary: swelling, bruising, tenderness, and redness at injection sites. These typically resolve within a few days. Rare but serious risks include infection, nodule formation, and — most critically — vascular occlusion, which occurs when filler inadvertently enters or compresses a blood vessel.

Vascular Occlusion Safety: Vascular occlusion is a rare but serious complication of dermal filler injection. At Maison Zolara, our injectors are trained in vascular anatomy, use slow injection technique, and employ blunt-tip cannulas where appropriate to reduce vascular risk. We maintain hyaluronidase on-site at all times for immediate reversal of HA fillers in the event of a suspected occlusion. Any sign of blanching, mottling, or vision change is treated as an emergency requiring immediate intervention.

Addressing the "Pillow Face" Fear

One of the most common concerns patients bring to consultation is the fear of looking "overdone" — the puffy, unnatural appearance sometimes called "pillow face." This outcome is the result of overfilling, poor product selection, or placement that ignores facial anatomy. It is not an inevitable consequence of filler.

Our approach is conservative by design. We begin with less product than you might expect, assess the result, and add incrementally. Our goal is always a refreshed version of you — not a different face. We also discuss realistic expectations openly: fillers restore volume and soften lines; they do not replicate surgical results.

Clinical Bottom Line: A 2023 peer-reviewed study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology assessed HA filler for midface volume restoration over 18 months and found sustained efficacy with no significant adverse events in the study cohort. ↗

Contraindications include active skin infection at the injection site, known allergy to HA or lidocaine, bleeding disorders, and pregnancy or breastfeeding. A full medical history is reviewed at consultation before any treatment is performed.

Alternatives

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers are one category of injectable volumizer. Understanding how they compare to other options helps you make an informed decision.

The table below compares HA fillers to the two primary biostimulatory filler categories. Note that Sculptra (poly-L-lactic acid) and Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) work through a fundamentally different mechanism — they stimulate the body to produce its own collagen rather than directly adding volume. Both are covered on their own dedicated pages at Maison Zolara.

Neurotoxins (such as Botox and Xeomin) are a separate category entirely — they relax muscles to soften dynamic wrinkles rather than adding volume. Many patients benefit from combining neurotoxins with fillers for a comprehensive result. Our Botox page and Xeomin page cover those treatments in detail.

Before and after your visit

How It Works

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found throughout the body — in skin, joints, and connective tissue — where it binds water and maintains volume and elasticity. Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers use a biocompatible, gel-form of HA that is injected beneath the skin surface to restore structure, smooth contours, and add definition.

The gel integrates with surrounding tissue, attracting and holding moisture to create a soft, natural result. Because HA is biodegradable, the body gradually metabolizes it over time, and results are not permanent. This also means that if you ever wish to adjust or dissolve your filler, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can break down HA quickly and safely — a meaningful safety advantage over non-HA alternatives.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, injectable dermal fillers are one of the most commonly performed aesthetic procedures, with results that can last from six months to several years depending on the product used and the treatment area. ↗

Treatment sessions typically take 30–45 minutes from consultation to completion. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, with only minor, temporary swelling or bruising possible at injection sites.

What to Expect

Here is what your filler journey looks like at Maison Zolara, from your first conversation to your follow-up.

Before Your Treatment

Your journey begins with a free consultation. Our licensed RN clinician reviews your medical history, discusses your aesthetic goals, and assesses your facial anatomy. We use this time to set realistic expectations, explain the products we recommend, and answer every question — including the ones you might feel awkward asking. No treatment is performed without your informed consent.

On the day of your appointment, avoid blood-thinning supplements (fish oil, vitamin E, aspirin unless medically necessary) for 5–7 days beforehand to minimize bruising. Arrive with a clean face and no makeup.

During Treatment

A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area 15–20 minutes before injection. Most HA fillers also contain lidocaine, which further reduces discomfort during the procedure. Our injectors work methodically, using a combination of fine needles and blunt-tip cannulas depending on the area. You will feel mild pressure and occasional brief stinging. Most patients describe the experience as very tolerable.

The injection portion of the appointment typically takes 15–30 minutes. We assess symmetry and result throughout, and you are encouraged to look in the mirror and provide feedback.

After Treatment

Swelling and mild bruising are normal and typically peak at 24–48 hours before resolving over the following week. Results are visible immediately, though final results are best assessed at 2 weeks once any swelling has fully subsided. A complimentary follow-up is available at 2 weeks if you have questions or wish to assess the result together.

Aftercare

Proper aftercare protects your investment and minimizes downtime. The guidelines below apply to the first 24–48 hours after treatment.

Do

  • Apply a clean cold compress (not ice directly) to reduce swelling
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night
  • Stay well hydrated — HA fillers attract water, and hydration supports results
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare for the first 48 hours
  • Attend your 2-week follow-up if you have any concerns

Avoid

  • Vigorous exercise for 24 hours (increases swelling and bruising)
  • Alcohol for 24 hours (increases bruising)
  • Extreme heat — saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga — for 48 hours
  • Facial massage or pressure on treated areas for 2 weeks
  • Blood-thinning medications or supplements unless medically necessary
Pricing

Dermal filler pricing at Maison Zolara is straightforward and transparent. Final pricing is confirmed at your free consultation, where we discuss how many syringes are appropriate for your goals.

  • Standard pricing: From $699 per syringe
  • Maison Circle member pricing: From $615 per syringe

Most single-area treatments (lips, smile lines, one cheek zone) require 1–2 syringes. Comprehensive facial balancing or significant volume restoration may require more. We will never recommend more product than your anatomy and goals warrant.

Cosmetic treatments are elective and are not covered by health insurance.

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers

Maison Zolara uses Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers — FDA-cleared, biocompatible injectable gels formulated to move naturally with facial expressions and integrate smoothly with surrounding tissue.

FDA-Cleared & Biocompatible

Hyaluronic acid fillers are regulated as medical devices by the FDA and are among the most studied injectable aesthetics in the world. Their biocompatibility means the body recognizes and tolerates the material well.

Reversible with Hyaluronidase

Unlike permanent or semi-permanent fillers, HA fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if a result needs adjustment or if a complication arises. This reversibility is a core safety feature.

Natural Movement

Modern HA formulations are engineered to flex and move with facial dynamics, so results look natural at rest and in motion — not stiff or mask-like.

Immediate & Lasting Results

Volume restoration is visible immediately after treatment. Results typically last 9–18 months depending on the area treated, the product selected, and individual metabolism.

Questions, answered

Who is a good candidate for it?

Most healthy adults experiencing facial volume loss, deepened lines, or wanting lip or contour enhancement are good candidates. The best way to confirm candidacy is a free consultation, where our licensed RN clinicians review your health history and assess your anatomy. Patients with active infections at the treatment site, known HA allergies, or who are pregnant are not candidates.

How long do results last?

Results from Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers typically last 9–18 months, depending on the area treated, the specific product used, and how quickly your body metabolizes HA. Lips tend to metabolize filler faster than cheeks or jawline. Maintaining results with touch-up treatments before the filler fully dissolves can extend the longevity of your outcome over time.

What does it cost at Maison Zolara?

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers start at From $699 per syringe. Maison Circle members start at From $615 per syringe. Final pricing is confirmed at your free consultation once we assess how many syringes are appropriate for your goals. Most single-area treatments require 1–2 syringes.

Is the treatment painful?

Most patients describe the experience as very tolerable. We apply topical numbing cream before treatment, and most HA fillers contain lidocaine, which reduces discomfort during injection. You may feel mild pressure and brief stinging, particularly in sensitive areas like the lips. Discomfort is typically minimal and short-lived.

How much downtime is there?

Minimal. Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Mild swelling and bruising are common and typically resolve within 3–7 days. We recommend avoiding vigorous exercise, alcohol, and extreme heat for the first 24–48 hours.

Can filler be reversed if I don't like the result?

Yes — this is one of the key advantages of Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers. An enzyme called hyaluronidase can dissolve HA filler quickly and safely. If you are unhappy with your result or experience a complication, reversal is possible. This is not the case with biostimulatory fillers like Sculptra or Radiesse.

What is the difference between fillers and neurotoxins?

Fillers add volume and structure beneath the skin. Neurotoxins (such as Botox or Xeomin) relax the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles like forehead lines and crow's feet. They address different concerns and are often used together for a comprehensive result.

Are fillers safe for all skin tones?

Yes. Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Fillers are safe for all skin tones and Fitzpatrick skin types. The product is injected beneath the skin surface and does not interact with melanin or skin pigmentation.
