Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair reduction is one of the most extensively studied aesthetic procedures available. When performed by credentialed clinicians on appropriate equipment, it carries an excellent safety profile. That said, understanding the realistic risk picture helps patients make informed decisions.

Common, temporary side effects include mild redness, swelling, and a sensation similar to a sunburn in the treated area — typically resolving within 24–48 hours. Skin sensitivity and slight darkening or lightening of the treated skin can occur, particularly if post-treatment sun exposure guidelines are not followed.

Rare risks include blistering, scarring, or paradoxical hypertrichosis (increased hair growth) — these are uncommon when treatment is performed by trained clinicians using appropriate parameters for the patient's skin type.

A note on skin tone safety: Patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick types IV–VI) face a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or burns when treated with wavelengths that are not appropriate for their skin. The 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength on the Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is specifically designed for deeper skin tones — it penetrates deeper into the follicle while bypassing the melanin-rich epidermis, dramatically reducing the risk of surface pigmentation changes. A 2025 study published in Lasers in Medical Science (Springer Nature) evaluating Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser hair removal in patients with Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI found the treatment to be safe and effective, with no adverse events observed. ↗

Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction uses concentrated light energy to target and thermally disable hair follicles at the root. It delivers long-term reduction in hair density and regrowth rate across large and small body areas. Multiple sessions are required, spaced several weeks apart. Results are durable and often long-lasting, though not universally guaranteed to be permanent. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus is appropriate for all Fitzpatrick skin types I–VI.

Diode Laser

Diode lasers (typically 808–810 nm) are another common laser platform used for hair reduction. They are effective for lighter-to-medium skin tones but may carry higher risk of pigmentation changes in darker skin compared to the 1064 nm Nd:YAG. Maison Zolara does not use diode laser technology — we use the GentleMax Pro Plus exclusively.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)

IPL is a broad-spectrum light technology — not a true laser — that can reduce hair growth. It is generally less precise than laser, delivers lower energy per pulse, and is typically not recommended for darker skin tones due to melanin absorption risks. IPL is not offered at Maison Zolara.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is the only FDA-recognized method of permanent hair removal, using an electric current to destroy individual follicles one at a time. It is highly effective but extremely time-intensive for large areas. Laser hair reduction is generally faster and more practical for treating larger body areas, while electrolysis may be preferred for very fine, light-colored hairs that do not respond to laser. Electrolysis is not offered at Maison Zolara.

Laser hair reduction works best when there is sufficient contrast between hair pigment and skin tone — the laser targets melanin in the hair follicle. The Candela GentleMax Pro Plus's dual-wavelength design makes it appropriate for a broader range of patients than many single-wavelength devices.

Good Candidates

• Adults with unwanted hair on the face, body, or bikini area
• Patients with dark brown or black hair (highest melanin contrast)
• Patients with medium-to-dark hair on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III)
• Patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick IV–VI) — treated with the 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength
• Patients who have shaved (not waxed) the area for at least 4–6 weeks
• Patients who can commit to a series of 6–8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart
• Patients seeking long-term reduction in hair density and ingrown hairs

Not a Good Fit

• Patients with very light, blonde, red, or grey hair (low melanin — laser cannot effectively target the follicle)
• Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding
• Patients with active skin infections, open wounds, or active cold sores in the treatment area
• Patients on certain photosensitizing medications (discuss with our clinicians at consultation)
• Patients with a history of keloid scarring in the treatment area
• Patients with recent significant sun exposure or active tan in the treatment area
• Patients unwilling or unable to avoid sun exposure between sessions

Laser hair reduction works through a principle called selective photothermolysis — a process in which a specific wavelength of light is precisely absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle, converting to heat that disables the follicle while leaving the surrounding skin intact. According to the Cleveland Clinic, the laser targets cells with high pigment concentration, which is why hair in the active growth phase (anagen) responds most effectively.

Because hair grows in cycles — anagen (active), catagen (transitional), and telogen (resting) — only follicles in the active growth phase are effectively targeted in any single session. This is why a series of treatments is necessary to achieve optimal long-term hair reduction across all follicles in a given area.

Clinical insight: A 2023 network meta-analysis published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy (Taipei Medical University, PubMed ID 37493187) analyzing 13 randomized controlled trials found that laser-based hair removal produced statistically significant reductions in absolute hair count compared to control conditions, confirming its status as the most evidence-supported method of long-term hair reduction available.

It is important to understand that laser hair reduction achieves long-term hair reduction — not guaranteed complete elimination. Most patients experience a dramatic, lasting decrease in hair density and regrowth rate. Some fine or hormonal regrowth may occur over time, and occasional maintenance sessions can sustain results.

Before Your Treatment

Your journey begins with a complimentary consultation with one of our licensed RN clinicians. We assess your Fitzpatrick skin type, hair color and texture, medical history, and treatment goals. You will receive specific pre-treatment instructions: shave the treatment area 24 hours before your session (do not wax, thread, or use depilatory creams for at least 4–6 weeks prior, as these remove the follicle the laser needs to target). Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for 2–4 weeks before treatment. Discontinue certain photosensitizing medications as directed. Arrive with clean, product-free skin on the day of your appointment.

During Treatment

Sessions are performed by our licensed RN clinicians in a private treatment room. You will wear protective eyewear throughout. The GentleMax Pro Plus's Dynamic Cooling Device delivers a brief cryogen spray before each pulse, minimizing discomfort. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick snap or mild heat — comparable to a rubber band flick. Treatment times vary by area: underarms may take 10–15 minutes; full legs may take 45–60 minutes. There is no downtime — most patients return to normal activities immediately.

After Treatment

Expect mild redness and warmth in the treated area for 24–48 hours. Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer and avoid heat (saunas, hot showers, intense exercise) for 24 hours. Sun protection is essential — apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to treated areas and avoid direct sun exposure for 2–4 weeks post-treatment. Do not wax, tweeze, or use depilatory creams between sessions. Shaving is permitted. Hair will appear to shed over the 1–3 weeks following treatment — this is normal and indicates the follicle has been effectively treated.

Proper aftercare protects your results and minimizes the risk of side effects. The guidelines below apply to all treated areas.

Do

• Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily to treated areas
• Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer
• Shave between sessions as needed
• Keep the area cool and clean for 24 hours post-treatment
• Stay hydrated and wear loose, breathable clothing over treated areas
• Attend all scheduled sessions for optimal results

Avoid

• Sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for 2–4 weeks post-treatment
• Waxing, threading, or tweezing between sessions
• Hot showers, saunas, or intense exercise for 24 hours post-treatment
• Exfoliating scrubs or active skincare ingredients (retinoids, AHAs) on treated areas for 48 hours
• Picking or scratching any redness or sensitivity in the treated area
• Skipping sessions — consistent spacing is critical to capturing hair in the active growth phase
