Microneedling in Lansing, MI
Microneedling is one of the most established, well-studied skin renewal treatments available at a medical spa. At Maison Zolara in west Lansing at 4820 W Saginaw Hwy, our licensed RN clinicians perform microneedling using sterile, single-use needle cartridges to create controlled, precise micro-injuries that stimulate your skin's own collagen and elastin production.
This page covers how traditional microneedling works, how it's different from our RF Microneedling treatment, transparent pricing for both the Face and Face + Neck options, and what to expect at every step of the process at our Lansing clinic.

How It Works

Microneedling — clinically known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) — works on a simple, well-documented principle: controlled micro-injury prompts the skin to heal itself with new, organized collagen and elastin.
During treatment, a device fitted with a sterile, single-use cartridge of fine needles creates thousands of microscopic punctures across the treatment area. Each puncture is a controlled, precise injury too small to be visible once healed, but large enough to trigger the skin's wound-healing cascade. Over the following weeks, fibroblasts in the dermis respond to this signal by producing new collagen and elastin, gradually rebuilding the skin's structural scaffold from within.
Unlike RF microneedling, this process uses mechanical injury alone — there is no radiofrequency energy and no added heat. That makes traditional microneedling a gentler entry point into collagen-stimulating treatments, well suited to early textural concerns, and generally associated with a shorter, milder recovery than RF-based approaches.
Clinical bottom line: Microneedling works by prompting your body's own collagen response through controlled mechanical micro-injury — the improvement you see over the following weeks is your own new collagen, not a filler or surface-level effect.
What It Treats
Fine Lines & Early Aging
Controlled micro-injury stimulates new collagen production, gradually softening the appearance of early fine lines, particularly around the eyes, forehead, and mouth.
Mild Texture Irregularities
Rebuilding the dermal collagen scaffold smooths rough or uneven surface texture, giving skin a more refined, even feel.
Enlarged Pores
Pore size is influenced by the surrounding collagen structure. Restoring that structure over a series of sessions can reduce the visible size of enlarged pores.
Early Collagen Loss
Patients noticing the first signs of skin thinning or reduced firmness often use microneedling as a proactive, low-downtime way to support their skin's own collagen production.
Superficial Acne Marks
Mild post-inflammatory marks and shallow textural irregularities left by past acne can improve with a series of microneedling sessions. For deeper, pitted acne scarring, RF Microneedling is typically recommended for a more intensive result.
Maintenance Between Deeper Treatments
Many patients use microneedling as a lower-intensity maintenance treatment between more involved procedures, supporting ongoing collagen turnover with minimal downtime.
The Microneedling Device
Sterile, Single-Use Needle Cartridges
Every treatment uses a brand-new, sterile needle cartridge opened in front of you, eliminating any risk of cross-contamination between patients.
Adjustable Needle Depth
Needle penetration depth is adjustable based on the treatment area and your skin's specific needs, allowing our licensed RN clinicians to customize the intensity of each session.
No Radiofrequency or Heat
Traditional microneedling relies on mechanical micro-injury alone. This makes it a gentler option than RF microneedling, with a shorter recovery window and a lower-intensity treatment experience.
Suitable for All Fitzpatrick Skin Types
Because the treatment does not rely on light or heat energy that interacts with melanin, microneedling is appropriate across the full range of skin tones.
Microneedling vs. RF Microneedling
Both treatments are available at Maison Zolara and use fine needles to create controlled micro-injury — the key difference is whether radiofrequency energy is added.
| Feature | Microneedling | RF Microneedling |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Mechanical micro-injury only | Mechanical micro-injury + radiofrequency heat |
| Intensity | Milder | More intensive |
| Best for | Fine lines, mild texture, enlarged pores | Deeper acne scars, skin laxity, tightening |
| Typical downtime | 24–48 hours mild redness | 24–48 hours redness and swelling |
| Session length | ~30 minutes | ~30–45 minutes |
| Starting price | From $299 | Higher — see RF Microneedling pricing |
Safety & Recovery
Traditional microneedling has an excellent, well-established safety profile. At Maison Zolara, every session is performed by our licensed RN clinicians under the clinical oversight of our on-staff Medical Director, using a sterile, single-use needle cartridge for every patient.
Common, expected effects (typically resolve within 24–48 hours):
- Redness similar to a mild sunburn
- Light pinpoint marks from the needles, fading within a day or two
- Mild sensitivity or tightness in the treated area
Contraindications — you may not be a candidate if you have:
- Active acne breakouts or active skin infection in the treatment area
- A recent history of isotretinoin use (discuss timing with your clinician)
- Open wounds or compromised skin barrier
- A history of keloid scarring (requires evaluation at consultation)
Clinical Bottom Line: Because traditional microneedling relies on mechanical injury rather than heat or light energy, it carries a lower risk profile than energy-based treatments and is broadly appropriate across skin tones and skin types when performed by a trained clinician.
What to Expect
Free Consultation
Your clinician reviews your skin concerns, medical history, and goals, and confirms whether Microneedling or RF Microneedling is the better fit for your specific concerns — and whether the Face or Face + Neck option makes sense for you.
Treatment Appointment
A topical numbing cream is applied and allowed to take effect. Your clinician then passes the microneedling device across the treatment area using a sterile, single-use cartridge. Most patients describe a light scratching or vibrating sensation. A full-face session takes approximately 30 minutes.
Recovery
Redness similar to a mild sunburn is expected for 24–48 hours. Most patients resume normal activities the same day or the next, with makeup typically fine to apply after 24 hours. New collagen continues developing over the following 4–6 weeks.
Aftercare
