Under Eye Fillers

What is Under Eye Fillers?

The under-eye area is one of the most complex regions of the face to treat — and one of the most rewarding when done well. Volume loss in the tear trough creates a shadowed, hollowed appearance that can make you look older or more fatigued than you feel. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have become one of the most studied non-surgical approaches to this concern, with a growing clinical evidence base supporting their safety and effectiveness when placed with proper technique ↗.

How it works

  1. 1

    Step 1 — Free Consultation

We assess your tear trough anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine whether HA filler, PRF, or a combination is appropriate.

  2. 2

Step 2 — Day of Treatment

Topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Step 3 — Immediate Post-Treatment

Mild swelling and occasional light bruising at the cannula entry point are normal and typically resolve within 3–5 days.

  4. 4

    Step 4 — Results & Follow-Up

The result is visible immediately, though final results are best assessed after 2 weeks once all swelling has resolved.

Is it right for you?

Safety & the Tyndall Effect

The under-eye area is one of the most technically demanding injection zones on the face. We address this directly because "undereye filler gone wrong" is a real search patients make — and the fears behind it deserve honest answers.

What is the Tyndall effect? The Tyndall effect is a blue or grey discoloration that appears when HA filler is placed too close to the skin surface. The thin, translucent undereye skin allows light to scatter off the filler gel, producing the visible color change. It is not dangerous, but it is cosmetically undesirable. ↗

How we minimize the risk:

  • Product selection: Volbella XC's low viscosity reduces the risk compared to thicker fillers
  • Cannula technique: A blunt-tipped cannula is threaded from a single entry point, reducing trauma and allowing precise placement at the correct tissue depth
  • Conservative volume: Less is more in the tear trough; overfilling is a more common cause of adverse outcomes than underfilling
  • MD supervision: All injectable treatments at Maison Zolara are performed by our RN clinicians under the oversight of our on-staff Medical Director

What if something needs correction? Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is fully reversible. Hyaluronidase, an enzyme that dissolves hyaluronic acid, can be injected to rapidly break down the filler if there is a Tyndall effect, asymmetry, or any other outcome that warrants correction. This is one of the key reasons many clinicians — and patients — prefer HA filler over non-reversible alternatives for the undereye zone.

A 2015 review in Clinical Plastic Surgery documented the multifactorial nature of under-eye dark circles and affirmed filler-based correction as an evidence-supported approach when anatomy is carefully assessed ↗.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Likely a Good Candidate

  • Hollowing or shadowing beneath the eyes due to volume loss
  • Fatigue or aged appearance that concealer does not address
  • Generally healthy; no active skin infections in the treatment area
  • Realistic expectations — subtle, natural-looking improvement
  • Not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Willing to complete a consultation first

May Need a Different Approach

  • Significant under-eye puffiness caused by fat pad prolapse (a structural issue filler cannot correct — surgical evaluation may be more appropriate)
  • Dark circles caused primarily by pigmentation rather than volume loss (laser or topical treatments may be more effective)
  • History of severe allergic reactions to HA products
  • Active cold sore outbreak (reschedule)
  • Recent dental surgery (wait 2 weeks minimum due to infection risk)

Before and after your visit

How Tear Trough Filler Works

The tear trough is a groove that forms where the lower eyelid meets the cheek. It deepens as the sub-orbicularis oculi fat (SOOF) and malar fat pads diminish with age — a process that can begin as early as the mid-twenties ↗. The resulting hollow creates a dark shadow that even good concealer cannot fully correct, because the underlying cause is structural — volume loss, not pigmentation.

Dermal filler placed in the tear trough adds back lost volume beneath the skin. For HA filler, the product is injected into the deep tissue plane — ideally in the preperiosteal or sub-orbicularis plane — where it integrates with surrounding tissue and provides support without visible surface changes ↗. The shadow lightens because the structural deficit has been addressed at its source.

PRF works differently: a small blood draw is centrifuged to concentrate platelets and growth factors, which are then injected to stimulate collagen production and tissue regeneration over 4–8 weeks ↗.

What to Expect

Step 1 — Free Consultation

We assess your tear trough anatomy, discuss your goals, and determine whether HA filler, PRF, or a combination is appropriate. We review your medical history including any blood thinners, dental procedures, or prior filler treatments. No commitment required.

Step 2 — Day of Treatment

Topical numbing cream is applied for 20–30 minutes. Volbella XC also contains lidocaine for additional comfort during injection. The cannula entry point is marked, and filler is placed with precise, slow delivery — the full treatment takes approximately 20–30 minutes.

Step 3 — Immediate Post-Treatment

Mild swelling and occasional light bruising at the cannula entry point are normal and typically resolve within 3–5 days. We provide cold compresses and aftercare instructions before you leave. You can return to most normal activities the same day.

Step 4 — Results & Follow-Up

The result is visible immediately, though final results are best assessed after 2 weeks once all swelling has resolved. A touch-up consultation at 2 weeks is available. Full follow-up at 6–12 months to assess longevity and discuss retreatment.

Aftercare

First 48 Hours

  • Keep the area clean and do not apply pressure to the treated zone
  • Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated if possible
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga for 24–48 hours
  • Do not receive facial massage or microneedling for 2 weeks
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours (increases bruising risk)
  • Apply cool (not ice-cold) compresses to reduce swelling

What's Normal vs. What to Report

Normal: Mild puffiness, light bruising at entry point, slight firmness in the treated area for a few days Call us if you notice: Significant asymmetry after 2 weeks, any blanching or white discoloration during treatment (sign of vascular compromise — very rare but should be reported immediately), blue-grey skin discoloration after swelling resolves

More about Under Eye Fillers

About Under Eye Fillers

At Maison Zolara, we take a two-option approach: if you want an immediate result that can be dissolved if needed, Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is our hyaluronic acid filler of choice for the periorbital region. If you prefer a fully autologous option that uses your own biology, PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) offers a gradual, natural-appearing improvement with no synthetic material. A complimentary consultation helps us identify which — or which combination — is right for your anatomy and goals.

Two Treatment Options

Juvéderm® Volbella® XC (HA Filler)

Best for: Moderate-to-significant volume loss; patients who want immediate, visible correction and the option of reversal

  • Immediate result visible at appointment
  • Fully reversible with hyaluronidase enzyme
  • Results typically last 9–12 months or longer
  • FDA-approved hyaluronic acid — same HA your body produces naturally
  • Placed with a fine cannula to minimize bruising
  • Mild swelling resolves in 3–5 days

PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin)

Best for: Patients seeking a fully autologous approach; mild hollowing; combination with HA filler for a layered result

  • Uses your own blood — zero synthetic material
  • Gradual result develops over 4–8 weeks as collagen rebuilds
  • Not reversible, but metabolizes naturally
  • Series of 2–3 sessions typically recommended
  • Lower bruising risk than needle-based HA filler
  • Can be combined with HA filler for synergistic effect
Juvéderm® Volbella® XC

Ultra-Thin Consistency

Volbella XC has the lowest viscosity in the Juvéderm family, making it specifically suited for thin, delicate periorbital tissue. Its soft, pliable texture integrates smoothly without creating lumps or the stiff feel associated with thicker fillers used in other facial zones.

Deep Tissue Placement

Proper technique places Volbella in the preperiosteal or sub-orbicularis plane — well below the skin surface. This depth is critical: placing filler too superficially in the thin undereye skin is the primary cause of the Tyndall effect (a blue-grey discoloration). Our cannula technique allows precise depth control.

Vycross® Cross-Linking Technology

Volbella uses Allergan's proprietary Vycross technology, which combines high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid chains to create a smooth, cohesive gel that resists degradation. This formulation is designed for longevity and softness in areas that require minimal lift force.

Questions, answered

How long do under eye fillers last?

Juvéderm® Volbella® XC in the tear trough typically lasts 9–12 months in most patients, with some patients seeing results beyond 12 months. Individual longevity depends on your metabolism, the volume placed, and your anatomy. Unlike filler in high-movement areas (like the lips), the undereye zone sees relatively little muscle movement, which generally supports longer product longevity.

Does under eye filler hurt?

Discomfort is minimal for most patients. Topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and Juvéderm® Volbella® XC contains lidocaine, which provides additional comfort during injection. Most patients describe a mild pressure sensation rather than pain. The cannula technique also reduces discomfort compared to multiple needle injections.

What is the Tyndall effect and how do you prevent it?

The Tyndall effect is a blue-grey discoloration that occurs when HA filler is placed too superficially in the thin undereye skin. We minimize this risk through product selection (Volbella XC's low viscosity is designed for this zone), cannula technique for precise depth control, and conservative volume. If a Tyndall effect develops, it can be resolved with hyaluronidase — a dissolving enzyme.

Can under eye filler be dissolved or reversed?

Yes. Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is a hyaluronic acid filler and is fully reversible. Hyaluronidase is an enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid and can be injected to dissolve the filler if needed. This is one of the primary reasons HA filler is preferred over non-reversible products in this area.

What is the difference between under eye filler and PRF?

Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is an FDA-approved synthetic hyaluronic acid gel that provides immediate volume correction, is reversible, and typically lasts 9–12 months. PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) uses growth factors from your own blood to stimulate collagen production gradually over 4–8 weeks — there is no synthetic material involved. PRF results are subtler and develop more slowly. We offer both options and can discuss which fits your anatomy and goals at a complimentary consultation.

How is under eye filler different from filler "gone wrong" photos I've seen?

Most adverse outcomes in undereye filler stem from three causes: using a product that is too thick or viscous for this delicate zone, injecting too superficially (causing Tyndall effect), or overfilling. We address all three: Juvéderm® Volbella® XC is specifically formulated for thin-skinned areas, we use a cannula for precise depth, and we take a conservative approach to volume. We also ensure you know that Volbella XC is reversible if any correction is needed.

Who performs under eye filler treatments at Maison Zolara?

Injectable treatments at Maison Zolara are performed by our licensed RN clinicians under the clinical oversight of our on-staff Medical Director. All injectors follow evidence-informed protocols developed for periorbital safety.

What does under eye filler cost at Maison Zolara?

Under eye fillers at Maison Zolara start from $699 per syringe ($615 for Maison Circle members). Most tear trough treatments require 0.5–1 syringe per side. Final pricing is confirmed at your consultation after assessing your anatomy and the volume appropriate for your goals.

How soon can I return to work after under eye filler?

Most patients return to work and normal activities the same day or the next day. Mild puffiness is normal for 3–5 days and can usually be covered with concealer after 24–48 hours. We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise, heat exposure, and facial treatments for the first 48 hours.
