Cheek Fillers

What is Cheek Fillers?

Cheek fillers are one of the most requested injectable treatments at Maison Zolara, our MD-supervised medical spa in west Lansing at 4820 W Saginaw Hwy. Patients from across the greater Lansing area — including Holt, Okemos, East Lansing, Mason, and DeWitt — choose midface volumization because it addresses one of the most visible signs of facial aging: the gradual loss of structural volume that flattens the cheeks, deepens nasolabial folds, and shifts the balance of the face downward.

Safety & Natural Results

The most common concern patients bring to their consultation is a simple one: "I don't want to look like that." They have seen photos of overdone, pillow-faced, or shelf-cheek results — and they want to understand how to avoid them. This is a completely reasonable concern and one we take seriously.

The critical fact: over-filled, unnatural-looking cheek results are almost always a consequence of technique and volume decisions, not an inherent property of the filler. Juvéderm Voluma XC placed correctly — in the right anatomical compartments, at the right depth, in a conservative volume — produces results that look like your face with more structural support, not a face that was visibly injected.

Our licensed RN clinicians at Maison Zolara use an anatomy-first approach to midface volumization:

  • Conservative starting volume. We begin with the minimum volume needed to achieve the correction goal, assess the result, and offer additional volume only if the patient and clinician agree it is warranted. We do not default to a preset syringe count.
  • Deep-plane placement. Voluma XC is designed for deep injection into the malar and submalar fat compartments. Superficial placement in the wrong tissue plane creates the shelf-like or artificial appearance associated with "bad cheek fillers." Correct depth placement integrates with anatomy rather than sitting on top of it.
  • Anatomy-matching, not symmetry-forcing. Natural faces are not perfectly symmetrical. Chasing perfect symmetry by adding excessive volume to the dominant side creates an overfilled appearance. We work within the patient's natural anatomical range.
  • Cannula technique option. A blunt-tip cannula — rather than a sharp needle — allows filler to be distributed smoothly through natural tissue planes, reducing bruising risk and enabling precise placement without repeated puncture.

A 2017 controlled clinical study in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology demonstrated that injection technique in the malar area is the primary determinant of both the aesthetic outcome and the safety profile of midface HA volumization. ↗

Post-treatment timeline: Mild swelling for 1–3 days is normal and expected — do not judge the result during this window. Results are visible immediately but reach their final, settled appearance at approximately 1–2 weeks as swelling resolves and the filler integrates. The two-week result is consistently more natural than the day-one result.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Good Candidates

  • Adults 21+ with age-related midface volume loss or flat cheek contour
  • Patients experiencing early jowling or deepening nasolabial folds with a deflated midface component
  • Those seeking natural-looking structural lift rather than a dramatic change in facial shape
  • Patients in generally good health without active infection at the treatment site
  • Those without history of severe allergic reaction to HA or lidocaine
  • Patients who are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Those with realistic expectations about what a conservative, anatomy-first treatment achieves
  • Patients from Holt, Okemos, East Lansing, Mason, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Charlotte, St. Johns, Williamston, and the greater Lansing area seeking a west-side Lansing provider

Not a Good Fit

  • Patients with active skin infection, open wounds, or inflammation in the midface area
  • History of severe allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Autoimmune or connective tissue disorders affecting wound healing (assessed at consultation)
  • Patients expecting results equivalent to surgical midface lifting or implant augmentation
  • Those seeking a dramatic facial transformation rather than a natural restoration of volume

If you are uncertain which category applies to you, a free consultation is the appropriate next step — our clinicians will give you an honest assessment.

Before and after your visit

How Cheek Fillers Work

The midface — the zone from the cheekbones down to the nasolabial folds — contains multiple anatomical fat compartments that lose volume progressively with age. As these compartments deflate, the overlying skin and soft tissue descend, creating a flattened cheek profile, deepened smile lines, and a general shift from the triangular, upward-pointing facial shape of youth to a more rectangular, downward-pointing shape.

Cheek filler works by physically replacing that lost volume in the deep anatomical compartments where it belongs. Juvéderm® Voluma® XC is a hyaluronic acid (HA) gel formulated using Allergan's proprietary Vycross cross-linking technology, which creates a cohesive, high-lift product engineered specifically for deep midface injection. When placed in the deep fat compartments of the malar and submalar midface, it provides structural lift and volume support that raises and reshapes the overlying tissue.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found throughout the body — particularly in skin and connective tissue — where it plays a central role in hydration and structural support. ↗ The cross-linking process in Voluma XC extends how long the HA gel resists enzymatic breakdown, supporting results that clinical studies show can last up to 24 months in many patients. ↗

Results are visible immediately after treatment and continue to refine over 1–2 weeks as any minor swelling resolves and the filler fully integrates with surrounding tissue.

What to Expect

Free Consultation

Your process begins with a no-charge, no-obligation consultation at our west Lansing location on W Saginaw Hwy. Our licensed RN clinicians assess your midface anatomy, review your medical history for contraindications, discuss your aesthetic goals, and give you an honest assessment of what filler can and cannot achieve for your specific concerns. If filler is not the right approach for your anatomy or goals, we will tell you. Bring any reference photos — positive or cautionary — to this conversation.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

In the days before your appointment, avoid blood-thinning medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E) if medically appropriate. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior. Arrive with clean skin, no active cold sore or skin infection in the treatment area, and well-hydrated. If you have a history of cold sores, discuss antiviral prophylaxis with your clinician at consultation.

Treatment Appointment

Topical numbing cream is applied to the midface and allowed to take effect for approximately 20 minutes. Your licensed RN clinician then carefully places Voluma XC into the deep compartments of the midface using a fine needle or blunt-tip cannula depending on the injection site and treatment plan. The filler contains lidocaine, which provides additional comfort during placement. The full treatment appointment typically takes 30–45 minutes. Results are visible immediately as filler is placed.

Immediate Aftercare

Mild swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising are expected and normal in the hours and days following treatment. Apply a cold compress gently to the treated area to minimize swelling. Avoid touching, pressing, or massaging the injection sites for 24 hours. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga, steam rooms), and lying face-down for 24–48 hours.

Two-Week Follow-Up Assessment

Your final settled result emerges at approximately two weeks. If you have any concerns about your result — insufficient correction, asymmetry, or any unexpected changes — contact us during this window. A complimentary follow-up assessment is available to evaluate your outcome and determine whether any additional correction is warranted.

Aftercare

The First 48 Hours

Mild swelling is normal and expected — it does not represent your final result. Apply a cool (not icy) compress gently to the cheeks for short intervals in the first few hours. Avoid touching, massaging, or pressing the injection sites. Sleep on your back if possible to avoid direct pressure on the treated area. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and heat exposure (hot tubs, saunas, heated yoga) for the first 24–48 hours. Bruising, if it occurs, can be covered with concealer after 24 hours.

Days 3–14

Residual swelling continues to resolve through the first two weeks. Avoid facial massage or laser/energy treatments over the midface during this period. You may return to normal skincare and light makeup immediately. Protect the treated area with SPF 30+ sunscreen. Avoid intense sun exposure or tanning for two weeks. At approximately 10–14 days, your settled result is visible — this is the result to evaluate, not the day-one appearance.

Pricing

Cheek fillers at Maison Zolara start from $1,099 per syringe. Maison Circle members start from $975 per syringe. Per syringe · Final pricing confirmed at consultation.

Most patients require 1–2 syringes per treatment session depending on the degree of volume loss and desired correction. Patients with significant bilateral midface deflation may require more. Your licensed RN clinician will give you a specific volume recommendation and cost estimate at your free consultation — we do not quote final pricing without assessing your anatomy in person.

Maison Circle Membership provides member pricing on all treatments, including cheek fillers, with a predictable monthly investment. Ask at your consultation about membership options.

Pricing shown reflects the per-syringe starting point. Additional syringes, combination treatments, and touch-up sessions are priced separately and discussed at consultation.

More about Cheek Fillers

About Cheek Fillers

This page covers exactly how Juvéderm® Voluma® XC works, what it realistically achieves, how our clinicians approach the "bad cheek fillers" fear that many patients arrive with, transparent pricing, and what to expect at every step of the process at our Lansing clinic.

Juvéderm® Voluma® XC

Vycross Technology

Juvéderm Voluma XC uses Allergan's proprietary Vycross cross-linking, which combines high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid chains into a highly cohesive, smooth gel. This architecture creates a product with high G-prime (resistance to deformation under pressure) — the physical property that enables structural lift in the deep midface.

FDA-Approved for Midface Volume Deficit

Voluma XC holds FDA approval specifically for the correction of age-related midface volume deficit in adults over 21. This designation reflects the product's completion of randomized controlled clinical trials demonstrating both safety and effectiveness for this exact indication — not an off-label adaptation from a lip or fine-line product.

Lidocaine-Integrated Comfort

Voluma XC contains 0.3% lidocaine mixed directly into the gel, which provides local anesthetic effect during and after injection. Combined with topical numbing cream applied before treatment, this reduces discomfort during the procedure without requiring a separate nerve block.

Up to 24-Month Duration

The Dermatol Surg pivotal study of VYC-20L (Voluma XC) after repeat treatment found that responder rates were maintained at the 24-month mark following re-treatment. ↗ Individual duration varies by metabolism, injection volume, and lifestyle. Results are temporary and touch-up treatment maintains correction over time.

Fully Reversible with Hyaluronidase

As a hyaluronic acid filler, Voluma XC can be fully or partially dissolved with hyaluronidase enzyme injection if needed. This reversibility is a meaningful safety advantage over non-HA options, providing a reliable correction pathway if a patient is unhappy with results or experiences a rare complication.

3D Volumization vs. Surface-Level Fillers

Voluma XC is formulated for deep injection — into the subcutaneous or supraperiosteal plane of the midface — rather than the superficial dermis. This deep-plane placement is what provides structural, three-dimensional lift rather than surface-level tissue filling.

Questions, answered

Who is a good candidate for cheek fillers?

Good candidates are adults in generally good health who have experienced midface volume loss, flat or hollow cheeks, or sagging that has shifted facial contours downward. You should not be pregnant or breastfeeding, should not have active skin infection at the treatment site, and should not have a history of severe allergic reaction to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine. Patients who want a subtle, natural-looking lift rather than dramatic transformation tend to be the most satisfied. A free consultation with our licensed RN clinicians at our west Lansing location is the best way to assess your anatomy and confirm candidacy.

How long do cheek fillers last?

Results from Juvéderm Voluma XC are not permanent — they are temporary and vary by individual. Clinical studies show Voluma XC maintains meaningful correction for up to 24 months in many patients, with the FDA-approval trial demonstrating sustained outcomes at that interval. Individual results depend on metabolism, injection volume, lifestyle factors, and anatomical characteristics. Touch-up treatment is available to maintain your results over time.

What do cheek fillers cost at Maison Zolara?

Cheek fillers at Maison Zolara start from $1,099 per syringe. Maison Circle members start from $975 per syringe. Most patients require 1–2 syringes per session depending on the degree of volume loss and desired correction. Final pricing is confirmed at your free consultation after our licensed RN clinicians assess your anatomy and goals. Per syringe · Final pricing confirmed at consultation.

Do cheek fillers hurt?

Most patients describe the discomfort as mild to moderate. Juvéderm Voluma XC contains lidocaine — a local anesthetic mixed directly into the filler — which reduces discomfort during injection. Topical numbing cream is also applied before treatment. The injection itself involves a brief pressure sensation at each point. Any discomfort resolves quickly after the procedure is complete.

What is the recovery like after cheek fillers?

There is minimal downtime. The most common side effects are mild swelling, tenderness, and possible bruising at the injection sites, typically resolving within 5–10 days. Results are visible immediately but continue to refine and soften over 1–2 weeks as the filler integrates with surrounding tissue and any swelling subsides. Strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat (saunas, hot yoga) should be avoided for 24–48 hours. Most patients return to normal daily activities the same day.

Can cheek fillers look unnatural or overdone?

Over-filled, "pillow-face" results are almost always a consequence of technique and volume decisions — not an inherent property of the filler itself. At Maison Zolara, our licensed RN clinicians use an anatomy-first, conservative-volume approach — we place filler in the deep anatomical compartments of the midface where volume is actually lost with age, rather than superficially building outward. We start with the minimum effective volume and evaluate results before adding more. The goal is always to restore the face you had — not to create a new one. If you have concerns about a specific look you've seen, bring photos to your consultation and we will discuss exactly what creates those results and how we avoid them.

Are cheek fillers reversible?

Yes. Juvéderm Voluma XC is a hyaluronic acid filler and can be partially or fully dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with your results or experience a complication. This is one of the key safety advantages of HA fillers over non-HA options. Reversal is not routine — most patients are satisfied — but the option exists and is a meaningful safety backstop.

How is Juvéderm Voluma XC different from other fillers?

Juvéderm Voluma XC uses Allergan's proprietary Vycross cross-linking technology, which creates a cohesive, high-lift gel specifically engineered for deep injection into the midface. Its physical properties — high G-prime (resistance to deformation) and high cohesivity — allow it to provide structural lift and volume support without spreading into adjacent tissue. It also contains lidocaine for in-treatment comfort and has FDA approval specifically for age-related midface volume deficit, a distinction not all fillers share.

How soon will I see results from cheek fillers?

Results are visible immediately after treatment. You will notice lifted, fuller cheeks as soon as the filler is placed. However, the final, settled result typically emerges over 1–2 weeks as any swelling resolves and the filler fully integrates with surrounding tissue. Many patients feel their results look most natural and refined at the two-week mark.
